Murphy's Point Ski Trails
Born in Ireland, John Murphy, Sr. emigrated to Perth in the 1830's. In 1856, John and his wife, Margaret, built their homestead on what is now known as Hogg Bay Beach (between 4 & 5). Their youngest of six, John Jr. continued farming until his death in 1936.
John Murphy's Loop passes through the campground's mature hardwood forest and touches on patches of open field and younger forest, remnants of Murphy's farming days.
Round Lake Back-Country (Nordic) X-Country Ski Trail the 7.5 Round Lake ungroomed back-country trail in combination with the park's groomed trails makes for a loop anywhere from 11.5 to 15.5 km. The nordic track portion is marked in both directions with yellow triangle trail signs, as it winds and twists through a beautiful open deciduous forest both on park and privately owned lands. Trail improvements allows intermediate skiers to enjoy this trail in both directions.
The trail's many little ups and downs make for an exciting ski depending on the snow conditions, especially for the intermediate skiers. However, if you are a novice skier looking for a physical challenge the best time to try this trail is after a fresh dump of snow when the tracks are few and the conditions are slow. If a physical challenge is your thing, then try breaking trail.
Bring some bird feed for the bird feeding station on route and you'll have the pleasure of visiting chickadees. Pack your sandwich in tin foil and plan to lunch at Lally hut; there's nothing better than a toasted sandwich cooked over the wood stove. The Round Lake Nordic Trail is a real gem. If the snow conditions are perfect, don't wait as conditions change quickly!
Be sure to check the Lanark County Tourism events calendar for the date of the annual Tay Valley Loppet and Tour held at Murphy's Point Provincial Park. Details and entry forms are available at:
